A French Bulldog doesn't need a haircut, but they do need regular care for their coat, skin folds and nails. At home, a quick brush once a week and daily cleaning and drying of their folds is usually enough. At our GroomRoom in Charlottenburg, the Mini Groom is a perfect fit, including washing, drying, nails, eyes and paws from 59 €. Appointments are available Tuesday to Saturday, and for short-haired dogs, we recommend a visit every 8 to 12 weeks.

What kind of coat does a French Bulldog have?

The French Bulldog has a short, smooth coat that lies flat against their compact and muscular body. According to the PDSA, they weigh between 11 and 12.5 kilograms on average and grow to about 30 centimetres tall. With such a short coat, a haircut isn't part of their grooming routine.

According to the PDSA, Frenchies don't shed heavily. A brush once a week and regular vacuuming will keep both their coat and your home in good shape. For this breed, most of the grooming work is actually about their skin. The heavy folds around their nose, similar to a Pug or English Bulldog, are typical.

How often should a French Bulldog be brushed and bathed?

Brush your French Bulldog at least once a week, as recommended by the PDSA and the American Kennel Club. Breeder Sharon Dykes even suggests daily brushing on the AKC website. With a short coat, this takes five minutes at most. Brushing removes dirt and loose dander, and distributes the skin's natural oils throughout the coat. The more often you brush, the less frequently your dog will need shampoo.

According to the AKC, puppies of this breed usually only need a bath once a month, depending on their diet and health. Use a puppy shampoo for this, not a product meant for human babies. To find out how the bathing routine for adult dogs depends on their coat and daily life, check out our guide Bathing your dog: how often is best.

How do you care for a French Bulldog's skin folds?

Clean the skin folds regularly with cotton pads soaked in salt water, and dry the skin thoroughly afterwards. According to the PDSA, you should only use other products if your vet has recommended them. It's warm and moist inside the folds, creating perfect conditions for bacteria and yeast. This can lead to skin fold dermatitis, an inflammation in the pocket between two skin folds. According to the PDSA, it most commonly occurs above the nose, on the tail and around the vulva.

How to do your daily skin fold care:

  1. Prepare fresh cotton pads and a bowl of salt water.
  2. Gently open each fold and clean deep inside the skin fold.
  3. Dry the skin thoroughly afterwards so no moisture is left behind.
  4. Check every fold for odour, redness and discharge.
  5. Keep an eye on your dog's weight, as being overweight can worsen skin folds.

The Kennel Club recommends that owners of wrinkly dogs clean and dry their skin folds daily. The Royal Veterinary College analysed data from over 900,000 dogs for this. French Bulldogs had a 25.9 times higher risk of skin fold dermatitis than crossbreeds. The risk continued to increase as the dogs got older.

When should you see a vet for red folds?

If a fold smells, is red or weeping, your dog needs to see a vet. According to the PDSA, skin fold infections also show up through scratching, rubbing, licking or biting. Yellow or white discharge in the fold is another warning sign. Some dogs experience pain when their folds are cleaned or moved.

Left untreated, an infected fold can cause much more serious problems, according to the PDSA. The vet will then decide on the best way to clean and treat it. A dog grooming salon is no substitute for this check-up, not even with a bath.

Important

If a fold is red, weeping or your dog reacts with pain when touched, have a vet check the skin first and postpone your grooming appointment.

How often do nails need clipping?

Check your French Bulldog's nails every week, as the breed standard calls for short, stubby nails. How quickly they grow back depends on diet, exercise and activity levels, according to the AKC. The breeder usually handles the first nail clipping. Ask them for a quick tutorial to use at home.

If you don't feel confident clipping them yourself, we offer it as an individual service starting at 15 €. The 4-in-1 combo package covering nails, paws, eyes and hygiene areas starts at 45 €. You can find all individual prices on our Individual services like nails and ears page. Our guide on dog nail clipping in Berlin explains the process step by step.

Plan your grooming appointment with heat and breathing in mind

French Bulldogs can overheat and struggle to breathe very quickly, especially in warm weather, according to the PDSA. Their short faces make breathing less efficient than in long-nosed breeds. That's why they tolerate heat and heavy exertion poorly, as noted by the AKC. They do best in moderate temperatures.

Go for walks early in the morning or late in the evening during summer and learn the signs of heatstroke. Because of their heavy front bodies, Frenchies are poor swimmers, so never leave them alone near water. At GroomRoom, we work without overbooking in a calm atmosphere. We take breaks as soon as your dog needs them. Let us know when booking if your Frenchie gets out of breath quickly. If your dog is unsure in the salon, Kristina is experienced with anxious dogs.

When can a Frenchie puppy come for their first appointment?

A puppy can come for a puppy introduction groom for their first salon visit after their second vaccination, as long as they weigh a maximum of 10 kilograms. The appointment takes 45 to 60 minutes and costs 89 € for up to 10 kilograms. Your puppy can sniff around and settle in first. Then we gradually introduce them to the water, hairdryer and comb.

We bathe them with mild puppy shampoo, blow-dry them gently and carefully look after their nails, eyes and paws. There is no cutting at the first appointment. Beforehand, we clarify age, breed and vaccination status; booking is done via WhatsApp. You can practise wrinkle care at home at the same time, because according to the AKC, Frenchies need this care from day one.

Our Toffee (Pomeranian) visited GroomRoom Berlin for the first time today, and we are absolutely thrilled. We booked the Full Grooming package and our little darling looked like a real fashion model afterwards. Very friendly, we will definitely be coming back.
