Dog nail clipping in Berlin: process, prices, tips

You usually hear overgrown nails first: a clicking sound on parquet or tiles. If the nail touches the floor when your dog is standing relaxed, it's too long. At GroomRoom in Charlottenburg, we offer nail clipping as a single service from 15 €, or together with paws, eyes and hygiene area from 45 €. A full grooming appointment isn't necessary for this. Nail clipping is included in the Full Groom and Mini Groom at no extra charge.

How can you tell if the nails are too long?

A nail is too long if it touches the ground when standing still or clicks on smooth floors. This puts pressure on the toe with every step. The American Kennel Club notes that long nails can splay the paw, reduce traction and strain toes and tendons over time. A nail that curls sideways also needs trimming.

Regular trimming acts as a preventative measure. The so-called quick of the nail, the blood-supplied core with nerves, recedes further with frequent cutting. This makes it easier to keep short nails short with minor touch-ups. In winter, we look at the whole paw, as road salt and ice clumps irritate the pads. How often do dog nails need trimming?

Most dogs need a nail trim every three to four weeks, according to the American Kennel Club. How fast the nails grow varies from dog to dog. Long walks on tarmac help wear down the front nails. Dogs that mostly run on grass and forest floors hardly wear their nails down at all. Back nails often grow longer because there is less friction there.

This results in a simple plan. Dogs with continuously growing coats come in for grooming every six to eight weeks, and a quick nail appointment fits perfectly in between. Check at home once a month while your dog is standing to see if any nail touches the floor. How nail clipping works at our salon

We work paw by paw and in small steps. The process is the same for every dog:

1. Your dog steps onto the lowered, height-adjustable grooming table. We then raise the table to working height, so nobody has to be lifted.
2. We take a paw in our hand, push the fur back and stabilise the individual toe with our thumb and index finger.
3. We only trim the tip, straight across the nail, leaving a few millimetres of space from the quick.
4. With light-coloured nails, the pink quick is easy to see. For dark nails, we take off several thin slices and slowly work our way down.
5. We also check the dewclaws on the inside of the leg, as they don't wear down when walking.
6. We take breaks between paws if your dog gets restless.

We use specific dog nail clippers for this, not household scissors. The British animal welfare charity People's Dispensary for Sick Animals points out that human scissors crush the nail and cause it to splinter. The same applies to trimming at home.

How much does nail clipping cost in Berlin?

With us, trimming all nails as an individual service starts from 15 €. If several small treatments come together, the combo package is cheaper than the sum of the individual services.

What is the dewclaw and why is it often overlooked?

The dewclaw sits higher up on the inside of the paw and doesn't touch the ground. It doesn't wear down when walking and therefore grows longer than the other nails. British vets from the aforementioned animal welfare organisation note that most dogs have five nails on their front paws and four on the back. Some dogs also have dewclaws on their hind legs.

If a dewclaw gets too long, it can curl and catch on leads, blankets, or fur. We count the nails on every paw and check both insides. Let us know before the appointment if your dog has a sensitive toe or if a nail has torn in the past.

What's best for anxious dogs: clipping or grinding?

Both are possible, the choice depends on the dog. The American Kennel Club lists clippers, nail scissors, and dog nail grinders as equally effective tools when used correctly. A grinder only takes off a little material at a time and smooths rough edges. It vibrates and makes a noise, which some dogs tolerate better than the clicking of clippers. We keep long fur away from the device while doing this.

For very anxious dogs, we schedule more time and work with breaks. If needed, a second person will help out, which we'll discuss beforehand. With puppies, it's all about getting them used to it first. The American Kennel Club recommends touching their paws early on in a friendly way and taking small steps: first let them sniff the tool, then introduce the sound, then trim a single nail tip. Practise this at home for a few minutes a day between appointments.
