A Persian cat needs daily help with grooming because they can't keep their long, dense coat in good condition on their own. At home, this includes daily combing and cleaning the corners of their eyes. At our cat grooming salon GroomRoom in Berlin-Charlottenburg, we take care of brushing, dry clipping, bathing and nail clipping. The packages cost 99 €, 129 € and 149 €, and every cat gets a quiet time slot with no dogs around.

Why does a Persian cat's coat mat so quickly?

A Persian cat's coat is mostly made up of undercoat, the soft, dense layer of hair beneath the longer topcoat. These fine hairs shed constantly and get trapped in the rest of the coat. With every movement, they rub against each other and twist into small knots.

The armpits, belly, inside of the hind legs and the areas behind the ears are especially prone to matting. While many Persian cats groom themselves thoroughly, their tongue barely reaches the skin underneath their dense coat. Within a few days, small knots turn into solid mats that pull on the skin.

How to groom a Persian cat at home

The most important grooming happens at home. A few minutes a day saves hours of dematting in the salon.

1. Comb daily: First use a coarse metal comb, then a fine one, and work your way down to the skin layer by layer.
2. Do the comb test: If the comb glides down to the skin without resistance, the area is free of mats.
3. Don't pull on knots: Gently loosen small knots at the tips of the hair with your fingers.
4. Clean the corners of the eyes: Wipe away tear stains every day with a soft, slightly damp cloth.
5. Check the hygiene area: Regularly check if the fur around the back end is sticky or matted.

Because of their short noses and flat faces, tears don't drain as easily in many Persian cats. This causes brown tear stains in the fur under their eyes. Daily cleaning stops these areas from matting and prevents the skin underneath from getting irritated.

Which package is right for your Persian cat?

At the GroomRoom cat grooming salon Berlin, we offer three packages specifically designed for cats. Nail clipping is included in every package, and all prices include VAT as of September 2026.

Regularly brushed Persian cats usually do well with just a brush-out. If the coat is already matted, we recommend a dry clip. For a lion cut, we clip the body short while leaving the head, paws and tip of the tail longer. The Full Groom Cat package is ideal for cats with a mat-free coat who tolerate a bath well.

How does clipping a Persian cat work at our salon?

We always clip matted fur dry. Wet mats shrink tighter as they dry, making them even harder to remove afterwards.

First, we take our time to check your cat's coat, skin and nails. Then we carefully work the clippers underneath the mats without pulling the skin. We clip sensitive areas like the armpits and belly especially slowly. Finally, we trim the nails and clean the corners of the eyes.

We work calmly and take breaks whenever your cat needs them. We don't offer sedation at the salon, as that belongs in a veterinary practice. If a cat gets severely stressed, we stop the session and discuss a visit to the vet with you.

Prepare your Persian cat well for their appointment

Good preparation makes the trip to the cat grooming salon easier for you and your cat. These tips have proven to work well.

• Carrier: Leave the carrier open in your home for a few days beforehand and put a familiar blanket inside.
• Feeding: Your cat doesn't need to arrive on an empty stomach, but you should avoid a large meal right before the trip.
• Leave matting alone: Don't brush out matted areas vigorously beforehand, as this hurts and irritates the skin.
• Give us the details: Let us know if your cat is anxious, unwell, or has been clipped before.

After clipping, your cat's skin will be a bit more sensitive. Keep them indoors for the first few days and avoid cold draughts. Their coat will grow back over the coming months.

When should your Persian cat see a vet?

We groom coats and trim nails, but we don't treat medical issues. If your cat has red or broken skin, scabs, bald patches, or discharge from their eyes or ears, they need to see a vet first. This also applies if they suddenly stop grooming themselves or show pain when touched.
