Why does Persian fur mat so easily?
Because it's long and, according to the PDSA, prone to knots and matting. The PDSA names daily combing as the way to stop solid knots from forming.
The PDSA also points out that Persian cats, because of their short, flat faces, can struggle to breathe and get out of breath quickly. That's why we build in breaks and keep an eye on the cat's wellbeing throughout the whole appointment. The animal comes first with us, not the clock.

How does an appointment at the salon work?
Your cat gets her own time slot with no dogs in the salon. First she gets to arrive and settle in, then we take time to get to know her calmly. We never pull on matted fur, we work carefully step by step with breaks built in. If the coat is badly matted, we'll talk through the best solution with you before carrying on.
We choose products based on coat type and skin condition, working with pH-neutral natural products. Prepare for your appointment in a few simple steps
A calm journey makes the salon visit easier for your cat.
- Carrier: Leave the carrier open in your home a few days beforehand and put a familiar blanket inside.
- Leave matting alone: Don't tug or pull at tight spots before the appointment, we'll loosen them gently.
- Share information: Let us know if your cat gets anxious, has any pre-existing conditions or has been clipped before.
- Allow enough time: Plan for 60 to 90 minutes, depending on the package booked.

When should your Persian cat see a vet?
If your cat's skin, coat or general condition seem off, see a vet first. The PDSA notes that Persian cats are prone to, among other things, primary seborrhoea with flaky, greasy skin, as well as ringworm, which causes itching, hair loss, scabs and flaking and can spread to humans.
Cornell University describes polycystic kidney disease as an inherited condition most common in Persian cats. Signs include increased thirst and urination, reduced appetite, weight loss, vomiting and lethargy. We take care of coat and claws, we don't treat medical problems.
