Watching the dog groomer: Why we ask you to stay outside the window

Why does having the owner in the room usually disrupt the work on the table?
The owner usually causes a distraction in the room because a dog wants to keep an eye on their human and might try to get to them. You don't even have to do anything wrong for this to happen, as your mere presence is enough. If your dog suddenly turns towards you, we might just be working on their face or paw with scissors or nail clippers. That's why their attention should ideally remain calmly on the table and the groomer.
To be honest, our rule is a balancing act and not a law of nature. We can't promise you that every dog will immediately calm down without their human. That's why we pay close attention to their behaviour throughout the entire groom and take breaks as soon as they need them.
What are the benefits of watching from the outside?
From the outside, you get your own impression of the work without interfering with the process. Some scenes might look like they need explaining through the glass, which is why we're clarifying a few of them here. We describe the complete journey through an appointment on the page about the appointment process in the salon.

| What you see | What's behind it |
|---|---|
| Your dog is standing or sitting, and no one is working on them right now | We are taking a break, wellbeing comes before the clock |
| The table goes down and then back up | Large dogs aren't lifted, they step onto the lowered table |
| Progress is slow on one part of the coat | We don't pull on mats and work step by step, heavily matted coats cost 15 € per started 15 minutes |
| Two people are standing at the table | For very anxious or defensive dogs, a second person assists by arrangement |
| A colleague is looking over a Junior Groomer's shoulder | Our Junior Groomer is working under supervision |
If you notice anything through the window, just ask us about it when you pick up your dog. For urgent matters, call us on 0152 5452 4113.

So you don't need to stand at the window the whole time. The salon is located between Kurfürstendamm and Wilmersdorfer Straße, meaning you can easily pass the time out and about. Just ask us when you drop your dog off what time you should be back, and then pop by for a look shortly before we finish.
How to watch without distracting your dog
Your dog might spot you through the glass, so it helps to be a little careful when watching. You can follow these five steps at every appointment:
- Keep your goodbyes in the salon brief so your dog can settle in calmly with us.
- Wait a few minutes before taking your first peek through the window from outside.
- Stand towards the edge of the window rather than directly in the line of sight of the table.
- Please avoid knocking, waving, and calling out while your dog is on the table.
- Step aside a little as soon as your dog spots you and gets restless.
Wrap up warm on cold days, as you'll be watching from the street. You can save your questions for pick-up, because until then, our full attention belongs to your dog.
Which dogs need a consultation beforehand?
Puppies and very anxious dogs need a chat beforehand because their appointment is structured differently. With puppies and young dogs, we don't start with a Full Groom straight away. The puppy introduction groom on their first salon visit focuses on sniffing around, breaks, and treats, and doesn't include a haircut during the first appointment. You can read how to prepare for the first visit in our article First visit to the dog groomer.
We let anxious dogs settle in first and work without pressure or force. Kristina, our Senior Groomer, specialises in anxious dogs. We'll discuss with you before the appointment whether you should stay in the room briefly for a dog like this. You can find out more in our guide anxious dog at the dog groomer.
Pain, bleeding, open skin, or severe itching are matters for the vet. Let us know when booking if your dog is receiving treatment for any of these.
Take a look at the salon before you book
Looking through the window works even without an appointment, as long as we're open: Tuesday to Saturday, 10 am to 6 pm. A spontaneous consultation in the salon is free of charge, you can just pop in on our open days. There you can ask us your questions about coats, duration, and prices.
You can reach us via U7 Adenauerplatz (5 minutes on foot), U1 and U9 Kurfürstendamm (10 minutes). You'll find parking spaces in Giesebrechtstraße and Brandenburgische Straße. Once you've decided, you can choose your package, your groomer, the day, and the time around the clock: Book an appointment online.
We got interested in GroomRoom because of an ad on Insta. We received a very friendly welcome, briefly discussed what we had in mind and came back after 2.5 hours.
