These triggers make a visit to the salon difficult

Most anxious dogs react to specific stimuli in the dog grooming salon rather than the room as a whole. We encounter four triggers time and again at GroomRoom, and each of them can be specifically defused.

• The dryer: The blower is loud, warm and blows directly into the coat, which many dogs perceive as a threat.
• The table: An elevated standing area with a smooth surface takes the solid ground from under the dog's paws.
• Unfamiliar hands: An unfamiliar person is touching their paws, ears and tummy, which are exactly their most sensitive spots.
• Past experiences: A previous appointment involving force or pain stays in their memory and affects every new visit.

If they panic at the hairdryer, turning it up to finish faster doesn't help. The dog only learns that their fear was justified, and the next appointment will be harder. How we work with anxious dogs at GroomRoom

An anxious dog gets more time, more breaks and, if needed, a second person at the table with us. We don't overbook the salon, so no dog has to wait next to three others and nobody works under time pressure. In cases of severe anxiety, we split the appointment into short stages that can be spread over several visits. The journey from the first sniff to the finished cut usually looks like this with us:

1. During the first contact, your dog can sniff around the salon without anyone reaching for them.
2. After that, we start with a short individual service like nail clipping or paws, which only takes a few minutes.
3. Bathing only follows once your dog knows the table and our hands and stays calm.
4. When drying, we work with a towel and a quiet hairdryer on a low setting, often keeping it away from their head.
5. If necessary, we schedule the cut for a second appointment so the first session stays short.

Between steps, we take breaks where your dog can get off the table and relax. Bathing takes place in our Hydra tub using pH-neutral natural products from LT and Ecopets, calmly and without rushing. When drying, we use a towel first, and the hairdryer only runs as quietly as necessary afterwards. Before the appointment, we talk honestly with you about what we think is realistic and what isn't. If your dog stops cooperating despite all the calmness, we stop and don't force them any further. You then only pay for the services we actually provided, and we discuss the next step.

Prepare your dog for the dog groomer at home

The best preparation for the dog groomer happens weeks in advance on your sofa. Practise touching their paws, lifting their ears and holding their tail for a few minutes every day. Leave a hairdryer running on a low setting in the next room at home while your dog is eating in a relaxed way. Over time, the noise gets closer, and the dog learns that nothing bad happens. Occasionally place your dog briefly on a non-slip raised surface and reward them there. Brushing in short sessions is also part of this, so they get used to being touched with tools.

On the day of the appointment, your dog should be well-exercised but not arrive completely exhausted. A long walk in the morning takes away the initial restlessness, whereas a race in the park right beforehand will make them more fidgety. Bring a few treats that your dog really likes so we can reward them on the table. When booking, briefly tell us what your dog has already experienced and what they are most afraid of.

For an anxious dog, a short individual service is the best first appointment at the dog groomer. Nail clipping only takes a few minutes and costs from 15 € with us, a manageable start for both sides. During these short visits, your dog gets to know the salon, the table and the person who will groom them later. After two or three calm short appointments, Mini Grooming with a wash and dry is usually the next step. Only after that do we plan the Full Grooming with a cut, once your dog is familiar with bathing and the hairdryer. Why it is better not to stand next to them

Most dogs become calmer on the table as soon as their human has left the room. This sounds harsh to many owners at first, but there is a simple reason for it. As long as you are standing next to them, your dog looks to you for help and tries to get to you. Any worried tone in your voice confirms to them that the situation is indeed threatening. Without you, they focus on the groomer, who can calmly show them that nothing bad is happening.

Through our transparent shop window, you can still watch from the outside at any time without being in the room. During the first stages, we will agree with you whether you stay briefly in the salon or wait outside. Many owners use the time for a coffee in the neighbourhood, and we will get in touch as soon as their dog is ready.

How much does an appointment with an anxious dog cost?

For very anxious or defensive dogs, we apply a surcharge by arrangement, as we need to schedule more time and a second person. We'll give you the exact price before the appointment after a personal assessment, so there are no surprises at the till. A very anxious Golden Retriever, for example, takes us around three hours and costs 209 to 240 €. In comparison, a regularly groomed Shih Tzu without anxiety is around 105 to 135 € for 90 minutes.

All starting prices are on our prices page, including VAT and as of September 2026. If an appointment is cut short, you only pay for the steps we've completed up to that point. However, for cancellations less than 24 hours before the appointment, we charge 70 percent of the price via invoice. You pay on collection, either in cash, by debit card, credit card, Apple Pay or Google Pay.
