Puppy grooming Berlin: How to prepare your puppy and dog for their first visit

The first visit to the dog groomer is a success when your dog arrives at the salon prepared and relaxed. A puppy can come to us at GroomRoom for their first introductory appointment after their second vaccination. In the two weeks before, you practise touching their paws, the brush and the sound of the hairdryer at home. The first appointment with us is kept deliberately short and includes breaks so your dog remembers the salon positively. For small dogs under 10 kg, our Junior Grooming offers a gentle start at a fixed price. When can a puppy go to the dog groomer?

A puppy can come for their first introductory appointment as soon as they have had their second vaccination at the vet. Your vet knows the exact time, as it depends on your puppy's vaccination schedule. Before the second vaccination, a puppy shouldn't meet unfamiliar dogs, and they will encounter other dogs with us. That is why we stick to this rule at the GroomRoom in Charlottenburg and ask about it when you book.

The sooner the first visit happens after the second vaccination, the easier it is for your puppy to get used to it. A young dog learns new sounds, smells and touches faster than an adult dog with set habits. That's why the introduction appointment isn't a cut, but a short visit with a few gentle touches. Two weeks of preparation at home

In the two weeks before the first appointment, you practise the most important steps for a few minutes every day. Your dog learns that being touched on their paws, ears and tummy is nothing bad. Stay calm during every exercise, reward immediately and stop before your dog gets restless.

1. Touching paws: Take each paw individually in your hand, hold it briefly and press gently between the toes. Reward your dog immediately with a small treat as soon as they leave their paw calmly in your hand.
2. Introducing the brush: On the first day, just place the brush next to your dog and let them sniff it at their own pace. The next day, gently stroke the brush over their back and sides a few times.
3. Practising the hairdryer noise: Turn your hairdryer on the lowest setting in the next room while feeding your dog. Over a few days, bring the hairdryer closer without pointing it directly at your dog.
4. Elevated spaces: Briefly place your dog on a non-slip table or a washing machine with a mat on top. Hold them securely, as they'll also be standing on a table later at the salon.
5. Face and ears: Run your fingers over their eyes, muzzle and ear flaps, just like we do when cleaning them. A quick look inside the ears is also part of it, so it won't be a shock later on.

What to bring and tell us for your first appointment

For the first appointment, bring your dog with a collar or harness, a lead and their usual treats. We use the treats during breaks so your dog associates the table with something positive. A familiar towel from their bed also helps some dogs because it smells like home.

More important than any accessories are your details, as they help us plan the appointment. Tell us when booking that it's the first visit and how old your dog is. For puppies, please also give us the date of their second vaccination. Tell us about any fears, sensitive spots, skin conditions or allergies we should consider when choosing products. We work with pH-neutral natural products from LT and Ecopets, but we still want to know about any known intolerances. Also let us know how your dog reacts to strangers and if they have ever defended themselves. These details determine our pace at the table and decide who from the team takes on your dog. How the first visit to the dog groomer at GroomRoom works

The first appointment with us is short, calm and has more breaks than any future visit. Your dog gets to sniff around the dog grooming salon first before even getting on the table. We work without overbooking, so there won't be a second dog waiting next to them during this time. Then follow a few simple steps: brushing, touching the paws, checking the nails and the hairdryer on a low setting. Between steps, we take treat breaks where your dog can just sit. As soon as they get visibly tired or tense, we stop, even if not everything is finished. We'll catch up on an unfinished cut later, because a bad first experience stays in a dog's mind for a long time.

Through our transparent shop window, you can watch from the outside without your dog looking for you in the room. Many dogs stay calmer when their owner isn't standing right next to the table. That's why we ask you to keep the goodbye short and wait outside in the neighbourhood.

Junior Grooming as a gentle introduction for small dogs

For small dogs up to 10 kg, we offer Junior Grooming as an introduction to salon care. One of our Junior Groomers will groom your dog under the supervision of an experienced colleague, at a relaxed pace and with plenty of breaks. The price is fixed in advance and won't change based on the effort required. Dogs under 5 kg cost 60 €, dogs from 5 to 10 kg cost 75 €. Appointments for this are on Wednesdays and Saturdays between 16:00 and 19:00. For larger dogs, we start with a Basic Grooming from 59 €, which includes washing, drying, combing and nail clipping. Mistakes you should avoid on your first visit

We see four mistakes time and again on first visits, and all four are easily avoided.

• Arriving hungry: A hungry dog is restless and finds it harder to focus on us and the treats. Give them a small portion a few hours before the appointment so they are neither hungry nor stuffed.
• Wet straight from a walk: Wet or muddy coats have to dry before we can even start brushing. Just go for a quick toilet break before the appointment and dry their paws afterwards.
• The long goodbye: if you repeatedly comfort your dog at the table, you are confirming to them that something is wrong. Hand them over cheerfully, say a quick goodbye and leave, then they will settle in with us much faster.
• The full works the first time: a complete clip with a bath, blow-dry and haircut is overwhelming for most dogs on their first visit. Plan the first appointment as a meet-and-greet and save the full haircut for the second or third visit.

What is normal after the first visit to the dog groomer

After the first appointment, your dog will often sleep deeply for several hours, as taking in so much new information takes a lot of energy. Some dogs will drink plenty of water as soon as they get home and then retreat to their bed. A slight change in behaviour in the evening is also normal, such as being extra clingy or having a brief phase of restlessness. By the next day, this has usually passed and your dog will behave as normal.

After the appointment, take your time to check your dog's paws, ears and skin, praising them as you do so. This helps them associate the salon visit with your positive attention and they will be even more relaxed next time. What happens after the meet-and-greet

After the first visit, your dog's coat type determines the rhythm for all future appointments. Breeds with growing coats like Poodles, Doodles, Bichons, Malteses, Yorkshires or Shih Tzus come every 6 to 8 weeks. For short-haired dogs, a salon visit every 8 to 12 weeks is usually enough. You brush Pomeranians and Spitzes at home several times a week and bring them to us every 6 to 10 weeks. On the second visit, we expand the programme step by step until a Full Groom from 79 € is possible in a relaxed way.

Regular appointments keep the coat in good condition and also maintain your dog's familiarity with the salon. Long breaks often mean that a dog has to start all over again at their next visit. Adult dogs who have never been to a salon

An adult dog can also cope well with their first visit to the dog groomer, they just need a little more time. The exercises at home apply to them just the same, but you should plan a few extra days for them. Adult dogs with coats that haven't been groomed for a long time often have matting, which are tight knots that reach right down to the skin. De-matting costs from 15 € per 15 minutes started and usually takes longer the first time. Sometimes a short clip is the gentler solution, and we will discuss this openly with you before the appointment.

For very anxious or defensive dogs, we can schedule more time and a second person by arrangement.
