A Husky needs brushing at home at least once a week, and several times a week during shedding season. Their double coat is never clipped, not even in summer. At GroomRoom in Charlottenburg, we remove the loose undercoat by hand, Tuesday to Saturday by appointment. The Mini Groom, which includes washing, blow-drying and combing, starts at 59 €. For large dogs, our booking system schedules up to 180 minutes so your Husky can take breaks.
How is a Husky's coat structured?
The Siberian Husky has a thick double coat made of two layers with different jobs. On the outside is the topcoat, also known as guard hair: long, strong hairs that repel dirt and water. Underneath sits the undercoat, a soft, dense layer of shorter hairs right next to the skin.
The undercoat keeps the body warm in winter. In warm weather, it traps cooler air close to the skin. The topcoat protects the skin from sunburn and insect bites. Both layers grow at different speeds, and this is exactly what causes problems when clipping.
Huskies are known as very clean dogs that groom themselves and hardly smell. That's why they only need a few baths a year. On the other hand, they shed more hair than most other breeds.

When does a Husky shed its coat?
A Husky sheds all year round, but especially heavily twice a year, in spring and autumn. During these weeks, they drop their entire soft undercoat, which is normal for the breed. Dog groomers call this shedding or 'blowing coat'.
Regular brushing and combing removes the loose undercoat and reduces matting. At the same time, it allows more air to flow through the coat again. A powerful vacuum cleaner is an absolute must for any Husky household during this time.
We explain exactly how to manage the shedding season for dogs with an undercoat in our guide Dog shedding: how to remove old fur properly.
How often does a Husky need brushing?
Brush your Husky at least once a week outside of shedding season. In spring and autumn, several sessions a week are a good idea to keep the coat smooth and well-groomed. Regular brushing removes dead hair, prevents matting and lets more air through the coat.
| Situation | Brushing at home | What to look out for |
|---|---|---|
| Normal months | at least once a week | remove dead hair, prevent matting |
| Spring shedding | several times a week | loosen undercoat layer by layer |
| Autumn shedding | several times a week | have the vacuum ready, keep the coat smooth |
| Summer heat | regular, short sessions | don't shave the coat, shade and water |
Work your way from the back to the legs in small sections. Lift the topcoat with one hand and comb out the undercoat underneath. Short, regular sessions are easier for many dogs to handle than one long sitting.
Why shouldn't you shave a Husky?
You shouldn't shave a Husky because shaving removes both layers of the double coat that protect them from heat and sun. Shaving removes the undercoat and topcoat at the same time. The undercoat often grows back faster than the topcoat afterwards. The coat then becomes uneven and does its job less effectively.
The Chief Veterinary Officer of the American Kennel Club, Dr. Jerry Klein, also warns of heatstroke after shaving. Without the insulating layer, the dog is more vulnerable, and the hair can grow back incorrectly. The coat also protects against sunburn.
At GroomRoom, we don't shave breeds with an undercoat like the Husky, Spitz, Pomeranian or Golden Retriever. Instead, we remove loose undercoat and tangles by hand.
Dog groomers usually only name two reasons for shaving: surgery, or as a last resort for matting that can no longer be safely brushed out. We always discuss heavily matted coats with you beforehand.
What helps a Husky in the summer heat?
In the summer heat, shade, cool water and walks during the coolest parts of the day help your Husky. Because of their thick coat, Huskies can easily overheat in summer. It's best to save long walks for the early morning or evening.
Dogs cool down differently than humans. They regulate most of their temperature by panting. Their blood vessels also expand, especially on their ears and face. Dogs only have sweat glands on their paw pads.
This means there are a few simple steps for hot days:
- Regularly brush out the loose undercoat so air can reach the skin.
- Keep the hair between the paw pads short so sweat can evaporate from the paws.
- Always offer your dog fresh water and shade; a cooling mat can also help.
- Never leave your Husky alone in the car, not even for a few minutes.
If your dog shows signs of overheating despite these steps, take them to the vet immediately.
Which tools remove loose undercoat?
An undercoat rake or a high-quality steel comb are ideal for loose undercoat. A comb with bent teeth can get caught in the coat and damage the hair. Choose tools that fit comfortably in your hand so you can work safely and calmly.
Deshedding means specifically removing the loose undercoat without shortening the topcoat. For a Husky, this is exactly what proper grooming entails. A traditional haircut isn't part of it, except perhaps neatly trimmed hair on the paws.
According to the American Kennel Club, for very thick coats, dog groomers often use a powerful dryer and comb through section by section after bathing and brushing. This work takes time, but it's one of the gentlest methods for thick double coats.
What happens during a Husky appointment at GroomRoom?
A Husky appointment with us starts with arriving and getting to know each other before the water even starts running. After that, we bathe them with pH-neutral natural products in the Hydra tub, blow-dry, and remove the undercoat step by step. We choose products based on coat type and skin condition.
Large dogs don't have to be lifted here. Our grooming tables are height-adjustable: we lower the table, your Husky steps on, and then we raise it to working height. You can read more about this in our guide dog groomer for large dogs in Berlin.
We take breaks and pay attention to your dog's well-being the entire time. We don't pull on matting. Large breeds are one of the specialties of our Senior Groomer Alina, who also grooms thick double coats on Pomeranians.
How much does Husky grooming cost in Berlin?
The Mini Groom for a Husky starts at 59 €, the Full Groom for large dogs at 209 €. Both are starting prices. We will give you the final binding price after a personal assessment before the appointment.
The Mini Groom includes washing, drying, combing, light thinning (carefully thinning out with thinning shears), as well as nails, eyes, paws and the sanitary area. Depending on size and coat, it takes 60 to 180 minutes. For a Husky shedding its coat, this is usually the right choice.
Light knots are included in the price. We demat heavier matting by hand for 15 € per 15 minutes or part thereof. You can find all packages and surcharges on our Prices page. You pay on collection, for example in cash, by debit card or with Apple Pay.
Our salon is located at Giesebrechtstraße 2, 10629 Berlin, a 5-minute walk from the Adenauerplatz U7 underground station. If you want to plan an appointment for the next shedding season, you can book an appointment online here.
When does a Husky need a vet instead of a groomer?
A Husky needs a vet if you notice pain, bleeding, open sores, severe itching or unusual hair loss. We don't diagnose these signs in the salon; that's what the veterinary practice is for.
Use your weekly brushing at home to calmly check their skin and paws. This way, you'll notice any changes early on.

Frequently Asked Questions
Is it okay to shave a Husky in the summer?
We don't shave Huskies. Even in summer, the undercoat keeps cooler air close to the skin, and the topcoat protects against sunburn. After shaving, the undercoat can grow back faster than the topcoat, causing the coat to grow back unevenly.
How often should I brush my Husky?
Brush him at least once a week. During shedding season in spring and autumn, it makes sense to brush him several times a week. This stops the loose undercoat from getting trapped under the topcoat.
How much does grooming a Husky cost at GroomRoom?
The Mini Groom, including washing, blow-drying, combing and nail clipping, starts at 59 €. The Full Groom for large dogs starts at 209 €. We'll give you the final, binding price after assessing your dog before the appointment.
How long does an appointment for a Husky take?
Our booking system schedules up to 180 minutes for large dogs. During shedding season, there's more loose undercoat, so we usually need the full time. We take breaks as soon as your dog needs them.
What should I do if my Husky's coat is matted?
Minor tangles are included in the price. We remove heavier matting by hand, which costs 15 € for every 15 minutes started. We don't pull on the coat and will discuss how much time is needed with you beforehand.
