What is the difference between a mobile dog groomer and a salon?
The difference is the location: the mobile dog groomer comes to you, whereas with a salon, you bring your dog to us. The American Kennel Club, or AKC for short, describes both methods as common forms of professional grooming. According to the AKC, dog grooming salons are located locally in the neighbourhood, and most work by appointment only. Some groomers also come straight to you. Many of them, according to the AKC, have a fully equipped mobile unit with supplies and even a bathtub.
The grooming process is similar in both cases. According to the AKC, a professional groom involves brushing, bathing and drying the dog, followed by a scissor cut or clip. Knots are brushed or combed out before the bath so the shampoo spreads more easily. So, the option you choose mainly comes down to the environment, equipment and travel.

What equipment does a good dog grooming salon offer?
According to the AKC, a good dog grooming salon has good ventilation, clean workstations, sturdy tables and tubs, as well as pet-friendly products. The AKC recommends asking yourself on-site if you'd be happy leaving your dog there. Here at GroomRoom, we work on height-adjustable grooming tables. You don't have to lift large dogs: we lower the table, the dog steps on, and then we raise it to working height.

We bathe dogs in a Hydra tub. For shampoo and care, we use pH-neutral natural products from LT and Ecopets. We choose these products based on coat type and skin condition. For cutting, we use Aesculap grooming tools. According to the AKC, different coats need different brushes, and groomers have this selection on hand. You can read more about grooming without lifting in our article dog groomer for large dogs.
Check out a salon before your first appointment. With us, a spontaneous consultation in the salon is always possible on weekdays and completely free.
When is a mobile dog groomer right for your dog?
A mobile dog groomer is a good fit if you find it difficult to travel to the salon or if your dog prefers to stay in familiar surroundings. For people with back pain or arthritis, the AKC mentions professional grooming as a general relief because it takes away the need to lift and hold the dog. This applies to home visits just as much as to the salon. If you don't have a car and live far away, a home visit saves you the journey.
It's important that the provider brings the equipment your dog needs. The AKC lists sturdy tables and tubs as features of a good working environment. Ask the provider exactly where the bathing and drying will take place. Also ask who cleans up the hair and water afterwards.
Why does GroomRoom only work in the salon?
We only work in the salon because the table, bath and tools are ready and waiting for every dog. The height-adjustable table and the Hydra bath can't be taken into every flat. In the salon, we plan without overbooking, so every dog gets their own time and breaks. Anxious dogs are allowed to just arrive and settle in first, with no pressure and no force.
Another reason is the clear view outside. Through our transparent shop window, you can watch from the outside while we work. The AKC considers it understandable that owners want to watch, at least during the first appointment. We explain why we ask you to stay on the other side of the glass in our article Watching at the dog groomer.
How does an appointment at our salon work?
An appointment with us follows six steps: arriving, getting to know each other, taking our time, taking anxiety seriously, gently removing mats, and choosing the right products. You can also find this on our Process page.

- Your dog arrives and gets to explore the room in peace.
- We talk to you about their coat, your wishes and any special requirements.
- We take our time and take breaks as soon as your dog needs them.
- We take anxiety seriously, which is why we work without pressure and step by step.
- We don't pull on mats; we loosen them carefully and discuss the best solution with you in cases of severe matting.
- We choose products to suit the coat type and skin condition.
According to our booking catalogue, a Full Groom takes around 60 minutes for dogs up to 2 kg and around 120 minutes for dogs up to 15 kg. We schedule 150 minutes for dogs up to 18 kg, and 180 minutes for larger dogs. This includes bathing, blow-drying, brushing, a breed-standard scissor cut or clip, nails, eyes, paws, ears and sanitary trim. You can find all the details on the Full Groom page. Light tangles are included in the price; for heavily matted coats, we charge 15 € for every 15 minutes started.
What should you look out for with both options?
With both options, you should ask about their experience with your breed, their training and how they handle emergencies. The AKC advises checking whether the groomer knows the breed standard and has mastered the appropriate cut. According to the AKC, a first aid kit should also be clearly visible. You should also ask if someone with first aid knowledge is always present.

The British veterinary charity PDSA advises against tackling matted fur at home. They recommend using a reputable dog groomer instead. Regarding prices, the AKC notes that costs depend on size, coat type and the services included. All our prices are starting prices; we'll give you the final price before the appointment after a personal assessment. You can find an overview on our Prices page.
