It's best to brush a Ragdoll daily, or at least once a week, paying special attention to the armpits and neck. The British veterinary charity PDSA states weekly as a minimum for this breed and recommends daily brushing for long-haired cats. At GroomRoom in Berlin-Charlottenburg, we groom cats from Tuesday to Saturday in their own dedicated time slot with no dogs around, starting from 99 € including nail clipping.

What kind of coat does a Ragdoll have?

A Ragdoll has a silky coat, which the PDSA classifies in the semi-longhair breed group and categorises as long in length. According to the PDSA, grooming serves two purposes: removing dead hair and untangling knots.

The PDSA describes Ragdolls as fairly low-activity cats that love to jump on your lap and follow you around the house. So, try short brushing sessions wherever your cat is already relaxing with you.

How often should you brush a Ragdoll?

Daily is the safe choice, once a week is the lower limit. Both values come from the PDSA: the breed page names weekly grooming as a minimum, the general care guide mentions daily brushing for Ragdolls. Cornell University also advises getting cats used to daily brushing and combing.

Where do Ragdolls get tangles?

Tangles on a Ragdoll mostly form under the armpits and around the neck, according to the PDSA breed page. The care guide adds that the legs, tummy and tail are particularly prone areas for long-haired cats. It strongly warns against just sticking to the easily reachable parts on the back and chest.

How to structure a short grooming session at home:

  1. Start on the back, which the PDSA considers an easy area.
  2. Slowly work your way to the neck and armpits.
  3. Then comb the legs, tummy and tail in small sections.
  4. Stop as soon as your cat looks worried or stressed.
  5. Reward them during and after with treats and praise.

The last two steps match the PDSA's advice to take things slowly and make grooming a positive experience. Choose a brush and comb that suit the coat type, and human nail clippers are a no-go. According to Cornell University, it's easiest for a cat to learn to be brushed when they are young. Older pets can also get used to it, according to the PDSA.

Important

According to the PDSA, you shouldn't tackle stubborn mats at home. Have them removed by a reputable groomer or ask your vet practice.

What do we do at the salon for matted coats?

At the salon, we don't pull on mats and work carefully step by step. Minor tangles are included in the price; for heavily matted coats, we charge from 15 € per 15 minutes started. If the coat is severely matted, we'll discuss the best solution with you beforehand. Dematting is one of the specialities of Nata, our Master Groomer.

If your Ragdoll won't tolerate brushing at home at all, an article by Cornell University on preventing hairballs suggests an alternative. It recommends a haircut at the vet or a reputable groomer once or twice a year, especially for long-haired breeds. You can read about the limits of clipping in the article Cat clipping in Berlin. The first steps for tangles are explained in the article Matted cat, what to do.

Do you have to bathe a Ragdoll?

The PDSA doesn't specify a fixed bathing schedule for Ragdolls. For long-haired cats, they describe brushing as regular grooming, and they only mention regular bathing for hairless breeds like the Sphynx. Therefore, only plan a bath for a specific reason, for example after consulting your vet.

With us, bathing is a separate choice: the Brush Only package and the clip without water don't include a bath. Only the Full Groom package includes one.

How much does Ragdoll grooming cost in Berlin?

Cat grooming starts at 99 €, and nail clipping is included in every package. We'll give you a binding final price after a personal assessment before the appointment.

All services are listed on the Cat grooming at GroomRoom page, and the other starting prices are on our pricing page. You can pay on collection in cash, by debit card, credit card, Apple Pay or Google Pay.

When should your Ragdoll go to the vet?

You should discuss any changes to the skin or coat with your vet, as the PDSA notes they can indicate a problem. This also applies to pain, bleeding, broken skin, noticeable hair loss and severe itching. Cornell University lists a dull, patchy coat as a possible sign of illness, because sick cats may stop grooming themselves.

Hairballs are also an issue, as Cornell University states that long-haired breeds have a significantly higher risk than short-haired breeds. One hairball every one to two weeks is considered harmless there. If your cat seems lethargic and hasn't eaten for more than about a day, you should call the vet immediately. This also applies if they repeatedly retch without producing anything.

For Ragdolls, the PDSA also lists two breed-specific conditions: hypertrophic cardiomyopathy, a heart condition, and polycystic kidney disease. Grooming doesn't replace a check-up here; we look after the coat and nails and don't treat medical conditions.

How your appointment in Charlottenburg works

Our Toffee (Pomeranian) visited GroomRoom Berlin for the first time today, and we are absolutely thrilled. We booked the Full Grooming package and our little darling looked like a real fashion model afterwards. Very friendly, we will definitely be coming back.
