Westie grooming in Berlin: Hand stripping or clippers

A Westie keeps its harsh topcoat through hand stripping, which means plucking dead hair in the direction of growth. Hand stripping costs 70 € per hour with us, and we schedule 120 minutes for it. We hand strip healthy West Highland White Terriers every 8 to 12 weeks. For seniors, soft coats or sensitive skin, we work with scissors, clippers and a stripping knife. What happens when hand-stripping a Westie?

During hand stripping, we pull out dead topcoat hairs individually so that new harsh hair can grow back. The American Kennel Club explains the background: in the resting phase, the hair still sits in the follicle but has detached from the root. These are exactly the hairs we remove. We pull the skin taut, grasp a few hairs between our thumb and index finger, and pull in the direction of growth.

For the undercoat, meaning the soft hair under the topcoat, we use a stripping knife. We use scissors or clippers for the face, throat, belly and sanitary areas because these zones are sensitive. What kind of coat does the West Highland White Terrier have?

The Westie has a double coat: a harsh, straight topcoat over a soft undercoat. According to the American Kennel Club, this hair is water-resistant and sheds sand and dirt. The breed originates from Scotland and was kept for hunting rats and mice. This heritage shows in everyday life, as Westies love to dig and bring dirt home with them.

Hand-stripping or clippers: what's right for your Westie?

Hand stripping suits healthy Westies with a harsh topcoat, while clippers are better for seniors and coats that have gone soft. We decide on a case-by-case basis, depending on coat condition, skin, and behaviour on the table.

• We choose hand stripping if the topcoat is wiry, comes out easily, and the skin looks calm.
• We choose clippers and scissors for older dogs, if they have joint pain, or if your dog can't settle during plucking.
• We combine carding, which is combing out dead undercoat with a stripping knife, with a clipper cut. The American Kennel Club describes this as standard grooming for family dogs.

If a Westie has been clipped for a long time, the hair often grows back softer and lighter. According to the American Kennel Club, the texture, shine, and colour of the topcoat change over time. Switching back to a harsh coat takes several appointments and patience.

How often does a Westie need hand-stripping?

For hand stripping, we recommend an appointment every 8 to 12 weeks. The British veterinary charity PDSA suggests four to six grooming sessions a year for breeds that need stripping, which fits this schedule. If your Westie is kept short with clippers instead, the American Kennel Club suggests an interval of four to six weeks, as the shape grows out faster.

Rolling the coat helps between appointments: while stroking your dog, you grip individual mature hairs close to the root and pull them out in the direction of growth. This is how a hand-stripping appointment works

1. Coat check and consultation, 5 to 10 minutes: We check the topcoat, undercoat, ears, and paws, and decide what will be done by hand.
2. Hand stripping the body: We pluck the back, flanks, neck, and shoulders while dry, taking breaks as soon as your dog gets restless.
3. Sensitive areas: We use scissors or clippers for the face, throat, belly and sanitary areas.
4. Bathing in the Hydra tub using pH-neutral natural products from LT and Ecopets.
5. Blow-drying and combing right down to the skin, followed by detail work on the legs, beard and head.
6. Nails, eyes, ears and paws to finish.
7. Handover: We show you how the coat looks and recommend the ideal time for your next appointment.

How much does hand stripping a Westie cost in Berlin?

Hand stripping costs 70 € per hour with us, and we schedule 120 minutes. If the appointment takes less time, we only charge for the actual time taken.

Dematting leg or belly hair is charged at an additional 15 € per 15 minutes started. We'll give you the binding final price after checking the coat before the appointment. Sensitive skin and white coats: what we look out for

Westie skin reacts visibly to grooming mistakes, so we check the belly, armpits, ears and between the paw pads before every appointment. We'll discuss any redness, scratch marks or damp patches with you before we start. We don't hand strip irritated skin; we use scissors there instead.

We wash with pH-neutral natural products and blow-dry right down to the skin so no moisture is left in the beard or between the pads. The PDSA advises against bathing dogs too often without a medical reason, as shampoo strips the natural oils from the coat. For a Westie, this usually means sticking to a bath during their hand stripping appointment.

When is a Full Groom better than hand-stripping?

A full clip is worthwhile if age or coat condition make hand stripping unsuitable. This applies to seniors with joint problems, soft hair after years of clipping, and dogs that struggle to stand still for long periods.

A Full Groom from 79 € includes bathing, blow-drying, brushing, a haircut, nails, eyes, paws, ears and the hygiene area. Hand stripping is done by Nata, Master Groomer, and Kateryna, Junior Groomer. For nervous dogs, we schedule Kristina, Senior Groomer, with extra time. We are open Tuesday to Saturday, 10 to 18, and closed on Monday and Sunday.
