The wire coat of the Miniature Schnauzer consists of two layers

The Miniature Schnauzer has a wire coat, which is a wiry coat made of two different hair layers. On the outside is the topcoat, consisting of harsh, thick hairs that repel dirt and moisture. Underneath sits the undercoat, a soft and dense layer that keeps the dog warm. The topcoat grows to a certain length, then dies and sits loosely in the skin. Unlike many other breeds, this dead hair hardly falls out on its own.

This is exactly where hand stripping comes in. The groomer plucks out the loose, dead topcoat with their fingers or a blunt stripping knife in the direction of growth. Done correctly, this doesn't hurt the dog because the mature hair comes out easily. The regrowing hair is harsh and shiny again, keeping its typical pepper and salt, black, or black and silver colour.

Clippers cut the topcoat but leave the dead root in the skin. The new hair has to push through next to the old hair and often grows back softer. With every clip, the proportion of soft undercoat increases, and the coat loses its structure. Grooming your Miniature Schnauzer at home takes just a few minutes a day. These tools will help you:

• A slicker brush with fine wire pins removes loose undercoat on the body and legs.
• A metal comb shows you if the beard and legs are tangle-free right down to the skin.
• A damp cloth cleans the beard after eating and prevents it from sticking together.
• A stripping stone, a porous stone for gripping fine hairs, helps with plucking individual areas.

Comb through the beard and legs two to three times a week, because that's where the longest hair grows. Brush the body once a week in the direction of hair growth. Many owners only realise after years that their Schnauzer's coat has changed. We see these four habits most often in the salon:

1. The dog is clipped to save time, and the coat gets softer with every clip.
