Yorkshire Terrier grooming at home: the tools you need
Grooming your Yorkie at home is quick and easy if you have the right tools. For everyday care, we recommend this equipment:
- A metal comb with fine and coarse teeth to check right down to the skin.
- A soft pin brush without bobbles to protect the fine hair while brushing.
- A light conditioning spray to add a little moisture to the hair before combing.
- A pair of scissors with rounded tips for the hair between the paw pads, if you're experienced.
- Soft wipes for the corners of the eyes and the beard after eating.
Lightly spray the coat before combing and work in small sections from bottom to top. The first knots usually appear behind the ears, under the armpits and around the collar. It's best to clean the beard after every meal so no food gets stuck in it. If you bathe your Yorkie at home, blow-dry the coat completely afterwards while combing through it.
Take the collar off indoors and use a harness outside. This prevents matting around the neck and takes the strain off your little dog's neck if they pull.
Common mistakes when grooming a Yorkie
Many problems with a Yorkie's coat are caused by small everyday habits. These are the most common mistakes we see in our dog grooming salon:
- Brushing the coat while it's dry, which causes the fine hair to break and look scruffy.
- Only brushing the top layer of the coat, while matting forms close to the skin.
- Hair clips or bands above the eyes are too tight and pull on the skin.
