How dog grooming prices are calculated
The price for a dog groomer in Berlin depends mainly on the time spent working on your dog. Four factors determine how long a grooming session takes and what it ultimately costs.
- Size and weight: A Chihuahua is done in an hour, while a Golden Retriever takes much longer just for blow-drying.
- Coat condition: A regularly brushed coat is quick to work with, whereas a matted coat requires de-matting and therefore extra time.
- Breed and coat type: A Poodle needs a scissor cut, while a Pomeranian with a thick double coat needs a lot of blow-drying time.
- Behaviour: A relaxed dog makes the job easy, while a very anxious dog needs breaks and sometimes a second person.
These four points explain why the same service can cost different amounts for two dogs. That's why we give starting prices rather than flat rates that are the same for every dog.
Time is the factor that ties everything together, as it reflects size, coat, and behaviour combined. A Full Groom takes us 90 to 180 minutes, while a Mini Groom takes 60 to 90 minutes. Within this range, your dog ultimately decides where the final price lands.

Three everyday price examples from our salon
Starting prices can be a bit abstract, so here are three typical examples from our dog grooming salon in Charlottenburg.
- Spitz up to 5 kg, regularly groomed: The dog comes every six to eight weeks, the coat is brushed and free of knots. Full Grooming then takes around 90 minutes and costs 129 €.
- Pomeranian after six months without a salon: The thick double coat is matted in places and is brushed out before bathing. The appointment takes 2.5 hours, with de-matting and the Pomeranian surcharge the price is between 165 and 180 €.
- Golden Retriever, very anxious: We work with breaks and give the dog time to get used to the bath and dryer. Around three hours of work result in a final price of 209 to 240 €. You can read how we handle anxious dogs on the Process and Preparation page.
All three examples show the same pattern: the better the coat is maintained, the shorter and cheaper the appointment will be. Our guide Affordable dog groomer Berlin shows you how to genuinely save money at the dog groomer.
What extra charges are there and when do they apply?
We only add extra charges if they genuinely apply, and we will always let you know before the appointment.
- De-matting: De-matting costs from 15 € per 15 minutes started, because we have to gently tease out matted fur strand by strand.
- Pomeranian surcharge: We charge an extra 20 € for Pomeranians because their thick double coat of topcoat and undercoat takes much longer to dry. The undercoat is the soft, dense layer beneath the topcoat that holds onto water for a long time.
- Very anxious or defensive dogs: We will agree on the price with you beforehand, as a second person is often needed to help.
- Short-notice cancellation: If you cancel less than 24 hours in advance, we charge 70 percent of the appointment price and will issue an invoice for it.
For a well-brushed dog with no matting, none of these extra charges apply. You will just pay the starting price or slightly above, depending on your dog's size and the amount of fur.
If you are unsure whether your dog's coat is matted, just pop in on a weekday without an appointment. We will take a look at the coat for free and give you an honest idea of what to expect.
Why we only give the final price after an assessment
We can give you a price range over the phone, but not a fixed price just yet. The reason: you can only tell if a coat is matted when you get your fingers right down to the skin. Many owners think their dog's coat is well-maintained because the surface looks smooth. But underneath, knots can hide behind the ears, in the armpits, or on the belly. That's why we assess every dog before the appointment and give you the fixed price afterwards.
This assessment doesn't cost you anything, only takes a few minutes, and can be done anytime on weekdays at the salon. You'll know exactly what you're paying before the appointment, so there are no surprises at pick-up. That's exactly what sets a genuine starting price apart from a flat rate that ends up being adjusted later.
How to keep your dog groomer costs down long-term
The most effective way to avoid high costs is a regular grooming schedule. A dog that visits every six to eight weeks rarely gets matted and takes less time. We recommend exactly this interval for breeds with continuously growing coats like Poodles, Doodles, Bichons, Malteses, Yorkshires, and Shih Tzus. Short-haired dogs only need to come every eight to twelve weeks, and hand-stripping is also every eight to twelve weeks depending on the breed. Pomeranians and Spitzes should visit every six to ten weeks and be brushed at home several times a week.
The second key is brushing at home, right down to the skin. If you only comb the surface, you'll miss the knots in the undercoat, which will cost de-matting time later. A few minutes of brushing several times a week will often save you multiple 15-minute blocks of de-matting at your next appointment. We explain exactly how often your dog should visit in our article How often to visit the dog groomer. You can read about what to do if your dog is already matted under Dog is matted, what to do.
Thirdly, Junior Grooming at a fixed price is well worth it for small dogs up to ten kilos. Our Junior Groomer works under supervision on Wednesdays and Saturdays from 16 to 19. The fixed price is 60 € for under five kilos and 75 € for five to ten kilos. Regular customers also use our loyalty card via Locus, which you can simply ask for at your next appointment.
How to spot a fair price
A fair price at the dog groomer is transparent, stated upfront, and tied to the actual working time. Make sure the salon openly displays its starting prices and gives you a fixed figure before the appointment. Ask what's included in the package so that nails, ears, or the sanitary area aren't added on individually later. With us, these steps are included in the Full Groom, and we give you the price before the appointment.
The tools and products we use matter too: we use pH-neutral natural products from LT and Ecopets, as well as Aesculap cutting tools. Our shop window is transparent, so you can watch your dog being groomed from the outside. We don't overbook, ensuring every dog gets the time included in the price. Over 290 5.0-star Google reviews show that Berlin dog owners appreciate this way of working. You can read more about what makes a great salon in our article Best dog grooming salon Berlin.
Payment at pick-up, no upfront costs
You only pay at pick-up, once you see your dog fully groomed. You can pay with cash, debit card, credit card, Apple Pay, or Google Pay, whichever you prefer. There are no upfront payments when booking, and we don't offer payment by instalments. Online booking is available around the clock; you choose the package, groomer, day, and time. You'll then get the fixed price after the assessment, before the actual appointment.
Our salon is located at Giesebrechtstraße 2 in Charlottenburg, a five-minute walk from the Adenauerplatz underground station. When you're ready, you can reserve your preferred time directly online right now: book your appointment online.
Frequently Asked Questions
How much does a Full Groom cost at a dog groomer in Berlin?
Here at GroomRoom, Full Grooming begins at 79 € and takes 90 to 180 minutes depending on the dog. This includes bathing, blow-drying, brushing, a breed-specific cut or clipping, as well as nails, eyes, paws, ears and the sanitary area. A regularly groomed Shih Tzu, for example, is around 105 to 135 €.
Why don't I get a fixed price over the phone?
We can only tell if a coat is matted when we feel right down to the skin with our fingers. That's why we give you a price range over the phone and a binding price after a free assessment in the salon. This way, you know exactly what you'll pay before the appointment and won't get any surprises at pick-up.
How much does it cost to get a dog clipped?
Clipping is part of our Full Grooming and costs from 79 € including bathing, blow-drying and all individual services. For a small dog without matting, it usually stays at the starting price or just above. If the coat is heavily matted, de-matting is added from 15 € per started 15 minutes.
What extra charges can there be and when do they apply?
Dematting costs from 15 € for every 15 minutes started, and for Pomeranians we charge an extra 20 € because of their thick double coat. For very anxious or defensive dogs, we agree on the price beforehand because more time is needed. For a well-brushed dog without matting, none of these extra charges apply.
How can I permanently reduce my dog grooming costs?
The best approach is a regular schedule every six to eight weeks, because the coat rarely gets matted then. Add to that regular brushing at home right down to the skin so no knots form in the undercoat. For small dogs up to ten kilos, Junior Grooming at a fixed price is also well worth it.
How and when do I pay at GroomRoom?
You only pay at pick-up when you see your fully groomed dog. You can pay us with cash, debit card, credit card, Apple Pay or Google Pay. There is no advance payment when booking, and we don't offer payment in instalments.
How much does Junior Grooming cost and who is it for?
Junior Grooming has a fixed price of 60 € for under five kilos and 75 € for five to ten kilos. Our Junior Groomer works under the supervision of an experienced colleague and takes plenty of time. Appointments are available on Wednesdays and Saturdays from 16 to 19.
