Check the team's training and experience

A reputable salon will tell you the price before the scissors make their first cut. Starting prices on the website are a good beginning, but they aren't enough. The condition of the coat determines the time and effort required, so the groomer should look at your dog beforehand. Also ask what surcharges there are, when they apply and how much they are. De-matting, a thick double coat and very anxious dogs are the usual reasons for extra costs.

Can you watch from the outside?

A salon that lets you watch them work usually has nothing to hide. The shop window shows you how calmly the grooming is done and how the team speaks to the dogs. You will also see if several dogs are on the table at once or if each dog gets the time it needs. Closed back rooms aren't necessarily proof of bad work, but they do take away your chance to see for yourself.

Keeping an eye on products, tools and cleanliness

Dog skin has a different pH level to human skin, which is why only pH-neutral shampoos should be used on your dog. Ask which brands the salon uses and if they have products for sensitive skin. Tools should be sharp, clean and from quality brands, because blunt scissors pull on the coat. Take a look at the tables, the bath and the floor too, as leftover fur from the day before is a warning sign.

We work with pH-neutral natural products from LT and Ecopets, alongside Aesculap cutting tools. Baths take place in a Hydra tub that massages the shampoo deep into the coat. This helps us loosen the undercoat, the soft layer beneath the topcoat, really thoroughly. For dogs with sensitive skin, we choose an extra mild shampoo from this range. We clean every workstation between dogs so there is no fur or shampoo left behind from the previous visitor.

No overbooking: Why time is the most important factor

A salon that takes on too many dogs a day cuts corners on brushing and drying. You'll notice this when appointments are much shorter than promised, and when dogs are left waiting in crates. That's why you should ask how many dogs a groomer handles at once and how long your appointment will take. A salon that gives you a set time frame has planned its day honestly. For a Full Groom, 90 to 180 minutes is realistic, depending on size and coat condition.
