Pomeranian dog groomer Berlin: How to groom your Pom properly

What makes the Pomeranian's coat special?

The Pomeranian has a double coat made of two layers with different jobs. On top is the top coat, consisting of long, coarse hairs that repel dirt and water. Underneath sits the undercoat, a soft and dense cushion of shorter hairs. This layer keeps heat close to the body in winter and traps cooler air against the skin in warm weather. The American Kennel Club classifies the Pomeranian among breeds with a triple or Arctic coat, alongside the Samoyed, American Eskimo Dog and Alaskan Malamute. It describes such coats as thick, oily, woolly and highly insulating.

According to the American Kennel Club, simple combing is often ineffective for such dense coats and can damage the hair. That's why groomers use a strong dryer and line-combing after bathing and brushing. Line-combing means working through the coat section by section to remove loose hairs. The same article also advises against drying such coats completely down to the skin. This is exactly where the difference to a Poodle lies: with a Pomeranian, the hard work is in the drying, not the scissor-trimming.

Can you clip a Pomeranian?

We don't clip Pomeranians and Miniature Spitzes in the salon. We remove the undercoat by hand and trim the shape with scissors. When clipping, the top coat and undercoat are cut to the same length. The American Kennel Club explains that both layers grow back at different rates, which can leave the coat looking uneven afterwards. It lists sunburn and skin damage, parasites like fleas and ticks, as well as dry skin and ingrown hairs as potential consequences. According to this account, clipping doesn't cool the dog down either, because dogs regulate their temperature mainly by panting and, to a limited extent, through their paw pads. The article only mentions an upcoming surgery or severe matting that can no longer be safely brushed out as reasons for clipping.

With severe matting, a comb and hands reach their limits. When this happens, we'll show you the condition of your dog's coat and discuss the next steps before we start. If you notice unusual hair loss, bald patches, severe itching or red skin between appointments, you should visit your vet. The Merck Veterinary Manual describes hair loss as a symptom with very different causes, from infections and parasites to hormonal imbalances. If your dog scratches the affected area, this source suggests investigating the itching first. We don't diagnose conditions in the salon; we only describe what we see on the coat.

How we groom Pomeranians in the salon

Grooming a Pomeranian is all done by hand here and follows a set routine:

1. We brush through the dry coat and gently remove small knots behind the ears and on the trousers.
2. Then we bathe your dog in the Hydra tub using pH-neutral natural products from Ecopets.
3. When drying, we blow-dry layer by layer and comb out the loose undercoat section by section.
4. Only when the coat is completely dry and standing up again do we cut the shape with scissors.
5. Finally, we trim the nails, clean the eyes and ears, and trim the paws and sanitary area.

Step three takes longer for a Pomeranian than for any other dog of this size. It brings back the volume that creates their round silhouette. The Full Groom includes a bath, blow-dry, styling, and care for the nails, eyes, ears, paws and hygiene area. If you don't need a haircut, you can book a Mini Groom, which includes washing, drying, combing and light thinning. Thinning means we use thinning scissors to reduce bulk without visibly changing the length.

Which cut suits a Pomeranian?

For a Pomeranian, we follow the natural silhouette and take off very little length. We round the head, tidy the ear edges, trim the paws neatly and shape the trousers. We create the popular Teddy-Cut entirely with scissors. This leaves the topcoat intact and the undercoat completely covered. For older dogs or those with a thin coat, we often recommend a longer style. We'll discuss how short to go beforehand with your dog, and you help decide. How often does a Pomeranian need to visit the dog groomer?

For Pomeranians and Spitz breeds, we recommend a salon appointment every 6 to 10 weeks. The interval depends on how thoroughly you brush at home. The American Kennel Club recommends a professional groomer every four to six weeks for owners who aren't confident with coat care at home. A dog that visits regularly spends less time on the table and stays calmer. Young Pomeranians can come in for a puppy introduction groom lasting 45 to 60 minutes, without a haircut, after their second vaccination. Which brush do you need at home?

For a Pomeranian's double coat, you need two tools: a slicker brush and a sturdy metal comb. The slicker brush with fine, bent pins removes loose undercoat in the dense areas. Afterwards, use a wide-toothed steel comb to check if you can get right down to the skin. The American Kennel Club also recommends an undercoat rake for double coats and advises combing the coat two to three times a week. According to this source, you should avoid combs with bent teeth as they can snag or damage the hair.

Matting on a Pomeranian almost always happens in the same places: behind the ears, under the armpits, on the trousers and under the collar. Part the coat there into narrow sections with your free hand and work your way from the bottom up. If the comb gets stuck, there is still loose undercoat or a developing knot in that spot. How much does a Pomeranian cost at a dog groomer in Berlin?

For a breed trim, book the Spitz and Pomeranian up to 5 kg package in our online booking for 129 € for 120 minutes. The extra work for the double coat is already included in this price. For a Mini Groom without a haircut for 2 to 8 kg, the Pomeranian surcharge is added: 20 € for the Mini Groom (already included in the Spitz/Pom Full Groom package). Together this comes to 99 to 119 € for a 90-minute duration. For lighter or heavier dogs, the respective size category applies.

If the coat is matted, we charge an additional 15 € per started 15 minutes for dematting. We will give you the binding final price before the appointment after we have looked at the coat.
