Pomeranian dog groomer Berlin: How to groom your Pom properly

A Pomeranian needs a specialist at the dog groomer because their double coat reacts differently than a Poodle's or Maltese's coat. If you clip a Pomeranian short with clippers, you risk the coat growing back patchy or not at all. That's why at GroomRoom in Berlin-Charlottenburg, we exclusively use a bath, brush and scissors on Pomeranians. Our Senior Groomer Alina specialises in the breed and explains what you need to know.

The Pomeranian's double coat consists of two layers

The Pomeranian has a double coat, meaning two layers of hair with very different jobs. The outer layer is the topcoat: long, coarse hairs that repel water and keep the coat in shape. Underneath lies the undercoat, a soft, dense cushion of fine hairs that keeps the dog warm in winter. Experts also refer to the Spitz coat as a stand-off coat, because the topcoat stands straight out from the body and is supported by the undercoat. It's exactly this combination that creates the round, plush silhouette the breed is so famous for.

The undercoat insulates in both directions: it protects against the cold in winter and the heat in summer. That's why it doesn't help your dog in summer if you have them clipped short. A well-groomed, thoroughly brushed coat lets air reach the skin and cools better than a clipped one.

Why clippers can cause damage to a Pomeranian

When a Pomeranian is clipped with clippers, the topcoat and undercoat are cut to the same length. The undercoat then often grows back faster than the topcoat and crowds it out over time. The result is a woolly, dull coat that mats more easily and loses its shape. In some dogs, the coat even grows back patchy after clipping, or doesn't grow back at all in certain spots.

Vets call this phenomenon post-clipping alopecia, which simply translates to hair loss after clipping. The exact causes aren't fully understood, but a disruption in the growth cycle of the hair follicles is suspected. It mainly affects breeds with a dense double coat, such as the Husky, Chow Chow or Samoyed alongside the Spitz. We don't want to scare you: not every clipped Pomeranian develops problems, and for many, the coat does grow back. However, this can take months, and no one can predict what the coat will look like afterwards. Because this kind of damage cannot be undone, we simply do not take this risk at our dog grooming salon.

How we groom a Pomeranian at GroomRoom

Grooming a Pomeranian is done entirely by hand here and follows a set routine. We show the general flow of an appointment, including arrival, breaks and products, on the Routine and Preparation page.

1. First, we brush the dry coat thoroughly and gently remove small knots behind the ears and on the trousers.
2. After that, we bathe the dog in the Hydra tub using pH-neutral natural products from LT or Ecopets.
3. The most important step happens during drying: we blow-dry layer by layer while brushing out the loose undercoat.
4. Only when the coat is completely dry and stands out do we cut the shape with scissors.
5. Finally, we trim the nails, clean the eyes and ears, and trim the paws and sanitary area.

Drying with a brush takes significantly longer for a Pomeranian than for other small dogs. But this is exactly where the volume is created that makes the Pomeranian look so pretty and round. The Mini Groom includes washing, drying, combing, light thinning, as well as nails, eyes, paws and sanitary area. Thinning means we use thinning scissors to reduce the bulk of the coat without visibly changing the length. For a full styling and bath, you book the Full Groom, which takes 90 to 180 minutes depending on the coat.

Teddy-Cut for Pomeranians: scissors only and by consultation

The Teddy-Cut is popular with Pomeranian owners because it makes the dog look round and puppy-like. At our salon, we create this look exclusively with scissors to preserve the topcoat. We trim the coat evenly to a length that still completely covers the undercoat. The head is cut round, the ears stay small, and the trousers are neatly blended.

A Teddy-Cut is significantly shorter than the natural breed standard and changes the coat in the long run. That is why we discuss with you beforehand how short it should be and whether it suits your dog. For an older dog or one with a very thin coat, we sometimes recommend a longer version. Brush your Pomeranian several times a week

The most important care for a Pomeranian happens at home, with regular brushing. Several times a week, you should brush the coat right down to the skin so that the undercoat doesn't get compacted. In a Spitz, matting almost always occurs where the coat rubs: behind the ears, under the armpits, and on the trousers.

A soft slicker brush with fine, curved wire pins is ideal for the undercoat. Afterwards, go through with a wide-toothed metal comb to check if you are really reaching the skin. If the comb gets stuck, there is still loose undercoat or a knot starting to form. Always brush in the direction of hair growth, using your free hand to part the coat into small sections. Avoid de-matting tools with blades, as they cut the topcoat and make the fur look dull. A light conditioning spray helps the brush glide through the coat more easily and reduces hair breakage. What to do during shedding season?

Twice a year, the Pomeranian sheds its coat and loses large amounts of undercoat. During this time, you should brush daily, otherwise the dead wool quickly forms dense mats. A salon appointment right in the middle of shedding season saves you a lot of work at home, because we brush out the loose wool while blow-drying. How often should a Pomeranian go to the dog groomer?

For Pomeranians and Spitzes, we recommend a salon appointment every 6 to 10 weeks. The exact interval depends on how thoroughly you brush at home and how quickly the coat gets matted. A dog that visits regularly spends less time on the table and stays more relaxed. In contrast, a Pomeranian that hasn't been to the salon for six months often needs 2.5 hours including de-matting. Young Pomeranians should come in for an introductory appointment after their second vaccination so they get used to the bath and blow-dryer early on. Prices for Pomeranian and Spitz at the dog groomer in Berlin-Charlottenburg

Our Mini Groom starts at 59 €, the Full Groom with a scissor trim at 79 €. For Pomeranians and Spitzes there is a 20 € surcharge because the thick double coat takes more time to dry. For the Full Groom, you select size S Spitz/Pom in the online booking, where the surcharge is already included at 129 €. A regularly groomed Pomeranian therefore starts at 89 € for a Mini Groom and 129 € for a Full Groom.

If the coat is matted, we charge an additional 15 € per 15 minutes started for de-matting. A Pomeranian after six months without a salon usually costs 165 to 180 € including de-matting and the surcharge.
