Why poodle and Doodle coats grow differently than other dogs' coats

Most dogs have a topcoat over a soft undercoat, the warming layer right next to their skin. They shed this coat naturally, and it only grows to a set length. Poodles are different: their curly hair keeps growing without a break, much like human hair. They hardly shed, so you'll find fewer hairs on the sofa, but it means a lot more work goes into their coat. Doodles like the Goldendoodle, Labradoodle or Cockapoo inherit this trait to varying degrees from their Poodle parent. Some Doodles also have the dense undercoat of a Retriever, which makes grooming much more demanding.

The dead hairs get caught in the curls and tangle with the new hair growing in. This happens especially quickly in areas that rub: behind the ears, under the armpits, around the collar and between the back legs. Within a few weeks, small knots turn into a solid mat that reaches right down to the skin. What haircuts are there for Poodles and Doodles?

There are many Poodle hairstyles, from the show cut with pom-poms to a short summer clip. Our clients ask for four cuts most often, and each one suits a different lifestyle.

The Teddy-Cut

The Teddy-Cut is the classic choice for Doodles and miniature poodles, and it's our most frequently booked style. The coat is left 2 to 5 centimetres long on the body, and the face is shaped round like a teddy bear. The ears stay soft and long, and the eyes are cleared so your dog can see well. Nathalie, our Head Stylist, perfects the Teddy-Cut on poodles and bichons using scissors and thinning shears. Thinning means using toothed scissors to thin out the coat, creating soft, seamless transitions.

The lamb cut

With the lamb cut, the body is clipped short while the legs and head are left noticeably longer. The name comes from a lamb: the legs look like little pillars, and the body stays slim. This cut is perfect for poodles who spend a lot of time outdoors but still want to keep their typical silhouette. Alina, our Senior Groomer, loves doing this cut on standard poodles because the proportions look especially good on them.

The sport cut

The sport cut leaves just 1 to 2 centimetres of coat all over the body, including the face. It's the most low-maintenance option and suits dogs who love playing in the lake or mud. If you want to get your Labradoodle clipped because you don't have enough time for daily brushing, this is the right choice. Matting hardly stands a chance at this length, and brushing at home only takes a few minutes. Many owners choose this for the summer and let the coat grow back in the autumn.

The puppy cut

The puppy cut is a gentle introduction to grooming rather than a set style. We just trim the tips, clear the eyes, and tidy up the paws and sanitary area. How long can the coat be left?

The length depends less on what you want and more on the condition of the coat and how much brushing you do at home. Up to 2 centimetres, a poodle does well with one quick brushing session a week. Between 3 and 5 centimetres, you should comb right down to the skin two to three times a week. From 6 centimetres, the coat becomes a daily project, and appointments at the dog groomer take significantly longer. For Doodles with a thick undercoat, we therefore recommend a maximum length of 3 to 4 centimetres on the body. You can go a bit longer for miniature and toy poodles because there's less surface area to maintain. The ears, head, and tail can be left longer with any style, as they are less prone to matting.

How to describe your ideal cut to us

Terms like Teddy-Cut mean something different in every salon, so we prefer to work with specific details. With these five points, we'll know exactly what you have in mind before the first cut.

1. Bring a photo showing the cut you have in mind for your dog.
2. Tell us the length in centimetres for the body, legs and head, rather than just saying short or long.
3. Tell us how often you brush at home so we can realistically plan the length to match.
4. Describe the shape of the face: round like a teddy, or more trimmed back with a clear muzzle.
5. Tell us what bothered you last time, for example ears that were too short or a tail that was too long.

Why matted coats sometimes need to be clipped short

Matting can only be combed out to a certain extent, and that point is reached quicker than you might think. A solid mat pulls on the skin with every movement, causing redness, moisture and sometimes eczema underneath. Brushing it out knot by knot hurts the dog and often takes more than two hours. In these cases, we get the clippers under the matting and take the coat down short. The result takes some getting used to at first, but the skin can breathe, and the coat will grow back evenly. We tackle light knots with a spray and comb, charged at 15 € per 15 minutes started. Grooming between appointments: What you can do at home

When grooming a Goldendoodle or a Poodle, your brushing routine decides whether the next cut can stay long. These five everyday habits make the difference between a beautifully maintained shape and solid matting.

• Comb right down to the skin with a metal comb, rather than just brushing over the surface of the curls.
• Tackle the friction areas first, like the ears, armpits, collar area and the insides of the back legs.
• Lightly spray the coat before brushing; dry Poodle hair breaks easily and builds up static.
• After a bath at home, the coat needs to be blow-dried completely, otherwise it tightens up.
• Take off the collar indoors to stop a solid mat forming around the neck.

Poodles and doodles belong at the dog groomer every 6 to 8 weeks to maintain their length. Those with a sport cut can stretch the gap a bit, but not so much with Teddy cuts at 4 centimetres. A regularly groomed miniature poodle is finished in about 90 minutes and stays close to the starting price. Larger doodles need more time, up to 180 minutes, and are therefore priced higher.

The final price depends on size, coat condition and your desired cut, and will be confirmed before the appointment. We charge for dematting from 15 € for every 15 minutes started, but only if it's really necessary.
