With Golden Retrievers, we don't shave the coat. Breeds with an undercoat don't get clipped, we de-matt by hand instead. We never pull at knots, we work carefully, step by step. Full grooming for large dogs starts from 209 €. Nail clipping is available separately from 15 €, paw trims from 18 €.
What kind of coat does a Golden Retriever have?
According to the American Kennel Club, the Golden Retriever has a dense, water-repellent double coat, meaning two layers of hair. The outer layer is the topcoat, which, according to the American Kennel Club, protects the body like a jacket against water and burrs. Underneath sits the undercoat, the fine layer of hair beneath the topcoat. According to the American Kennel Club, Golden Retrievers shed moderately all year round and heavily once or twice a year.
Its topcoat can be straight or slightly wavy. Then there's the feathering, the longer hair behind the ears, on the chest, legs and tail.

Is it okay to shave a Golden Retriever?
We don't shave Golden Retrievers. For breeds with an undercoat like Spitz, Husky or Golden Retriever, we de-matt by hand, as stated on our prices page. The American Kennel Club also advises against shaving or clipping the coat, as this preserves both its purpose and appearance. For dogs not entered in shows, they recommend using thinning shears on the feathering, a serrated scissor that thins out the hair.
If the coat is badly matted, we'll talk through the best solution with you, as explained on our process page. The PDSA advises against removing matted fur yourself at home and recommends seeing a reputable groomer instead.
How does an appointment at the salon work?
Our process is explained on the process page and has six steps:
- Arrival.
- Getting to know each other.
- Taking our time.
- Taking fear seriously.
- Gently work out any mats.
- Choose the right products.
Bathing takes place in the Hydra tub with pH-neutral natural products from LT and Ecopets. For cutting, we use Aesculap grooming tools. We choose products based on coat type and skin condition, taking breaks throughout and keeping an eye on your dog's wellbeing the whole time.
The American Kennel Club recommends always brushing the coat before a bath. When washing, the dog should get wet right down to the skin. Rinsing twice helps, according to the American Kennel Club, since a double coat tends to hold on to shampoo. For drying, they recommend a cool dog dryer, blown against the direction of growth.

How often should a Golden Retriever visit a dog groomer?
If you leave coat and paw care entirely to the professionals, the American Kennel Club recommends booking every four to six weeks. It's worth adding an extra appointment in spring and autumn, since the PDSA points out that dogs shed more heavily during these months. Puppies up to ten kilos can come in for their puppy introduction groom after their second vaccination. There, we get them used to water, the dryer and the comb step by step, with no cutting at the first session.
Coat care at home: brush, comb and routine
During normal shedding, the American Kennel Club recommends brushing once a week, and daily when shedding heavily. A bristle brush won't get through such a dense coat, though. These are the tools the American Kennel Club recommends for grooming a Golden Retriever:
- A pin brush, which you use to brush the coat against the grain first, then smooth it back in the direction of growth.
- A metal comb with medium to wide teeth for the feathering on the ears, chest, legs and tail.
- Dog shampoo and conditioner, since conditioner reduces static and flyaway hair.
- Nail clippers or a grinder, with a trim roughly once a month.
If there are knots, it helps to dampen the hair with water or conditioner beforehand. Check the ears weekly, as the American Kennel Club notes that a Golden Retriever's floppy ears are prone to infection. After swimming, dry the inside of the ears thoroughly.
