We groom a Lagotto Romagnolo at GroomRoom in Berlin Charlottenburg with a bath, blow-dry, thorough comb-out and a breed-standard cut. We offer appointments from Tuesday to Saturday, and a Full Groom starts at 79 €. The American Kennel Club advises clipping the curly coat regularly. Some Lagotto coats mat more easily than others, which is why regular grooming is essential. At home, you brush them a few times a week, and for the salon, the AKC recommends a visit every few weeks.

What kind of coat does a Lagotto Romagnolo have?

A Lagotto Romagnolo has a dense, woolly curly coat with a tight ringlet structure and a visible undercoat. The undercoat is the short, soft layer of hair right against the skin, lying underneath the topcoat. The American Kennel Club describes the coat as feeling rough and being water-resistant.

According to the AKC, the curls cover the entire body right down to the tail. On the head, the curls are looser, forming lush eyebrows, a moustache and a beard. Even the cheeks have thick hair. The AKC compares these typical curls more to human hair than to fur.

The Lagotto has a double coat and, according to the AKC, sheds very little. Occasionally, small tufts of hair might be left behind. For you, this means: loose hairs hardly fall out; they get trapped in the curls. That's exactly where knots form if no one brushes them out.

Originally, the Lagotto retrieved game from the marshes of Italy as a water dog. The name derives from the Italian word 'lago' for lake. Later, it became a truffle dog, and this image defines the breed to this day. According to the AKC, males weigh a maximum of 35 pounds and stand under 20 inches tall.

How often does a Lagotto need to be brushed?

Brush your Lagotto a few times a week, working your way right down to the skin. The AKC states that a few brushing sessions a week are enough for most dogs. With a thick curly coat, it's worth checking the armpits and ears in between.

A slicker brush has short, tightly packed wire pins that glide through the coat at an angle and are gentle on the skin. The AKC explicitly recommends them for dogs with curly coats because they remove loose hair and prevent matting. A wide-toothed comb also helps to untangle knots and matted areas.

How to brush your Lagotto at home:

  1. Get your slicker brush and wide-tooth comb ready.
  2. Part the coat into sections and work your way down to the skin with gentle strokes.
  3. Use a light hand with the slicker brush, as firm pressure can be uncomfortable for your dog.
  4. Check behind the ears and under the legs especially carefully.
  5. Use the comb to check if it glides through from root to tip without resistance.
  6. Keep an eye out for burrs, plant bits, small cuts or scratches while you're at it.
Tip

Get your puppy used to brushing early on. The AKC recommends starting straight away and using a gentle brush for their soft puppy coat.

Where does the Lagotto coat mat the fastest?

Mats on a Lagotto usually form behind the ears and under the legs, as the hair rubs together there when they walk and lie down. The AKC highlights exactly these two areas as typical matting zones. Hair also grows between their toes, which the AKC notes mats easily and needs careful trimming.

A small knot can usually still be teased out with a comb and some patience. If it's missed, new curls grow into it and the knot turns into a solid mat. The tighter the curls, the harder it is to see from the outside whether the coat is still tangle-free at the roots.

Here at GroomRoom, we don't pull on mats. We work carefully step by step and take breaks as soon as your dog needs them. Light knots are included in the price, but for heavily matted coats we charge 15 € per 15 minutes started. If the matting is severe, we'll discuss the best solution for your dog with you beforehand. You can read more about prevention in our guide on preventing matting.

What does a breed standard cut involve?

The breed standard requires an evenly trimmed coat that follows the dog's silhouette. The length is measured in its curly state, meaning without brushing the coat straight beforehand. The curls should be evenly distributed across the body and tail, and never twisted into thin cords.

For a family dog, the standard is a guideline, not a must. For a breed-appropriate cut, we follow your dog's silhouette and leave the curls in their natural curly shape.

We'll agree on how long the coat should be after the appointment before we make the first cut. Feel free to bring a photo you like. We also explain which cut suits your daily routine and coat condition in our dog hairstyle consultation guide.

How does Lagotto grooming work at GroomRoom?

A Lagotto receives our Full Groom, which includes bathing, blow-drying, brushing and a breed-standard cut. We also take care of the nails, eyes, paws, ears and hygiene area. We choose pH-neutral natural products from LT and Ecopets to suit their coat type and skin condition.

After the bath, we blow-dry the curls thoroughly. The AKC points out that thorough drying prevents knots and matting. We then comb through the coat completely before we even pick up the scissors. We cut using Aesculap grooming tools.

We lower our height-adjustable grooming tables so your Lagotto can step on by themselves. Then we raise the table to working height. You can watch from outside through the shop window if you like. We show you the six steps of an appointment on our page How an appointment works.

Natalie, our Head Stylist, mainly works with Poodles and Bichons, and therefore with curly coats. For Doodles and dematting, Nata is our specialist.

How much does a Lagotto cost at a dog groomer in Berlin?

A Full Groom for a Lagotto starts at 79 € with us. We will give you the final, binding price before the appointment after a personal assessment. The size, coat condition and how much time dematting takes are the deciding factors.

The Mini Groom includes washing, drying, combing, light thinning, nails, eyes, paws and hygiene area. Thinning means taking the bulk out of the coat with special scissors without visibly reducing the length. It is perfect between two full haircuts when the curls just need some maintenance. You can find all services and surcharges on our prices page.

You can pay on collection with cash, debit card, credit card, Apple Pay or Google Pay. If you cancel less than 24 hours in advance, we charge 70 percent of the price.

When can a Lagotto puppy go to the dog groomer?

A Lagotto puppy can come to us for a puppy introduction groom after their second vaccination. The appointment takes 45 to 60 minutes and costs 89 € for up to 10 kg. There is no haircut on the first visit.

The puppy can sniff around and settle in first. Then we introduce them to the water, hairdryer and comb step by step. We bathe them with a mild puppy shampoo, blow-dry them gently and carefully look after their nails, eyes and paws. Beforehand, we will check their age, breed and vaccination status with you.

At home, it helps to briefly touch your puppy's paws, ears, and face every day and praise them for it. You can read more about this in our guide on puppy coat care.

When should a Lagotto go to the vet instead of the dog groomer?

According to the AKC, redness, swelling, discharge, or a strong yeasty smell in the ears can indicate an ear infection. In that case, a vet should take a look. The same applies to wounds, broken skin, pain, or noticeable itching under the curls.

If we notice anything unusual during the groom, we'll let you know straight away. According to the AKC, moisture after swimming or bathing can promote ear problems. That's why you should dry your Lagotto's ears thoroughly after every trip to the water.

You can choose an appointment for your Lagotto around the clock: book an appointment online. You'll find us at Giesebrechtstraße 2, 10629 Berlin, accessible via U7 Adenauerplatz (5 minutes on foot), U1 and U9 Kurfürstendamm (10 minutes).
