Why an early first visit makes sense
The PDSA advises introducing grooming while your pet is still young, so it gets used to the process and feels comfortable with it. Older pets can learn to enjoy grooming too, as long as the experience stays positive. The AKC recommends a gentle, step-by-step approach for young puppies and dogs with no salon experience: touching paws and claws, giving treats, taking your time.
That's how our puppy introduction groom works. The puppy gets to sniff around and settle in first, then we gradually get them used to water, the dryer and the comb. We work calmly, praise lots and take breaks whenever needed. We bathe with a mild puppy shampoo, then dry gently and take care of claws, eyes and paws with a light touch. We don't cut anything at the first appointment.
The introduction groom is available for puppies up to 10 kilos from their second vaccination onwards and takes 45 to 60 minutes. Which cut suits a Maltipoo or Cavapoo?
The PDSA notes that some owners choose to have their poodle crossbreed's coat clipped shorter. It's easier to manage this way, and it takes out some of the tight curls.
According to the AKC, a professional grooming appointment follows a set order: brushing, bathing, drying, then trimming or clipping. Groomers comb out any matting before the bath, since the coat lathers up better afterwards. Per the AKC, most dogs get trimmed above the eyes, at the ear tips and on the undersides of the paws. Clipping is done when it's needed or requested.
We only offer clipping for breeds whose coat allows it, such as Poodles, Doodles, Bichons, Maltese or Yorkshire Terriers. Breeds with an undercoat, the soft layer of hair right above the skin, aren't clipped by us. This includes Spitz, Pomeranian, Husky and Golden Retriever, for these we deshed by hand. How often does a Maltipoo need a dog groomer?
There's no fixed schedule that works for every dog. The AKC lists breed, coat length and coat type, time spent outdoors getting dirty, and climate as the key factors. It notes that owners bring their dog to a groomer anywhere from every six weeks to just three times a year. In between, the AKC recommends keeping up with grooming at home.
The PDSA adds that some breeds need clipping or trimming four to six times a year. Poodle crossbreeds, according to the PDSA, should be brushed several times a week. The AKC also gives an example: after a short puppy cut, it can take several months before the next appointment is due. How to care for curls between appointments
When brushing, the AKC recommends gentle strokes right down to the skin. Check for burrs, bits of plant, matting, small cuts and grazes as you go. These are the tools the AKC lists for coat care.
- A slicker brush, which the AKC says loosens matting and dead hair.
- A pin brush, which the AKC recommends for many long-haired dogs.
- A dog-specific dryer, which the AKC recommends for certain coat types.
The PDSA points out that dogs shed more in spring and autumn as their coat adjusts to the season. During this time they need extra care. According to the AKC, you should bathe regularly, but not too often, as frequent bathing strips the natural oils from skin and coat. Afterwards, dry with a towel and, if it suits the coat type, with a hairdryer.
Dry the ears thoroughly after a bath. According to the AKC, moisture left in the ear after bathing or swimming can encourage ear problems.
What often goes wrong with Maltipoos and Cavapoos
- Only the surface gets brushed, even though the AKC recommends working right down to the skin.
- The coat is left to dry on its own after rain or a bath, but according to the PDSA, curly hair tangles easily, especially when wet.
- Brushing between appointments happens too rarely, with the PDSA recommending several times a week for poodle crosses.
- Tight mats get worked on at home, something the PDSA advises against, recommending a reputable groomer instead.
- Bathing happens too often, which according to the AKC leaves skin and coat dry and brittle.

How does an appointment at our salon work?
Our process has six steps: arriving, getting to know each other, taking our time, taking fear seriously, gently loosening mats, and choosing products suited to coat type and skin condition. Washing takes place in the Hydra bath tub with pH-neutral natural products from LT and Ecopets, and cutting is done with Aesculap grooming tools. The grooming tables are height-adjustable. Large dogs don't need to be lifted, the table is lowered, the dog steps up, and it's then raised to working height.
We never pull on mats. We work carefully, step by step, and if the coat is badly matted, we'll discuss the best solution with you. Anxious dogs are given time to settle in first, without pressure and without force. We build in breaks and keep an eye on wellbeing throughout, the animal always comes first.
